Mint, the well known mouth and breath freshener that is scientifically known as Mentha, has more than two dozen species and hundreds of varieties. It is an herb that has been used for hundreds of years for its remarkable medicinal properties.
The market is full of products like tooth paste, chewing gum, breath fresheners, candy and inhalers which have mint as their base element. Most of us are familiar with the refreshing application of mint, but it has far more to offer than that.

Health Benefits of Mint Leaves:-

Digestion: Mint is a great appetizer or palate cleanser, and it promotes digestion. It also soothes stomachs in cases of indigestion or inflammation. When you feel sick to your stomach, drinking a cup of mint tea can give you relief. Also, if you are someone who travels long distances via plane or boat, the menthol oil derived from mint can be very soothing for nausea and related motion sickness.

The aroma of mint activates the salivary glands in our mouth as well as glands which secrete digestive enzymes, thereby facilitating digestion. These attributes are why mint is extensively used in the culinary arts. Much of the western world includes mint as a part of appetizers or as an element of palate cleansers, to be eaten before the main course so the food will digest comfortably.
Nausea & Headache: Again, the strong and refreshing aroma of mint is a quick and effective remedy for nausea. Even just the smell of mint oil or freshly crushed mint leaves or the use of any product with mint flavor, and your stomach issues will be alleviated. In fact, many people keep menthol oil or mint-flavored products with them at all time to avoid nausea. Balms with a mint base or basic mint oil, when rubbed on the forehead and nose, gives quick relief in case of headache. Mint is a naturally soothing substance, so it can alleviate the inflammation and temperature rise that is often associated with headaches and migraines.

Asthma: Regular use of mint is very beneficial for asthma patients, as it is a good relaxant and relieves congestion. That being said, using too much mint in this way can also irritate the nose and throat.
Memory Loss: A recent study explored the effects that mint has on alertness, retention, and cognitive function. It found that people who frequently use chewing gum, whose major active ingredient is mint, had higher levels of memory retention and mental alertness than those who did not. The stimulant qualities of mint, once again, have shown yet another reason to pop that stick of gum in your mouth, or chew some leaves when you’re feeling less than brilliant!
Weight Loss: Aside from all the other health benefits of mint, it also can help in your efforts to lose weight in a healthy way! Mint is a stimulant, as we’ve already mentioned, but it also stimulates the digestive enzymesthat absorb nutrients from food and consume fat and turn it into usable energy. Therefore, by adding mint to your diet, you are increasing the amount of fat that is being consumed and put to use, rather than being stored and contributing to your weight gain!

1. Strengthens Immunity

Vitamin C is a water soluble Vitamin which means that it is not stored in the body. Our bodily excretions like sweat, stools and urine flush it out of our body every time and every day. This is why it needs to be replenished through the dietary sources. Lychee is an excellent source of Vitamin C and  contains 71.5 mg per 100 g serving.  With a high amount of Vitamin C in it, lychee proves to be a good antioxidant which improves the immune  function of our body. Lychee increases immunity to protect against common diseases like cough, cold and flu. Vitamin C also strengthens immune system to protect from day to day infections. It is highly recommended especially for young children who are highly vulnerable  to infections and cold.
Vitamin C is also known to alleviate scurvy which is mainly caused by the Vitamin C deficiency. This condition begins with symptoms like general lethargy, spongy and bleeding gums, spot formation on skin and bleeding in mucous membrane. It is a serious condition which can prove to be fatal if not controlled in time.
Lychee contains good amount of antioxidant Vitamin C, Vitamin B-complex and phytonutrient flavonoids. These antioxidants and phytonutrient flavonoids are important nutrient that makes lychee healthy.
Antioxidants are required to protect the body from oxidative stress. High oxidative stress is caused due to pollution and UV radiation. This process creates free radicals from oxygen molecules. These  free radicals destroy normal cell DNA and change the function of cells to form cancer cells.
But antioxidants neutralize these free radicals and acts as a shield to protect cells from damage. So lychee protects from cancer and tumors.
Free radicals are also known to cause premature ageing and delay in cell repair. These are also taken care of by the anti-oxidants in out diets thereby reducing and controlling inflammation and degenerative diseases like Arthritis.
3. The Blood Relation
Lychee is a rich source of nutrients that are required for the production and circulation of blood. Hemoglobin in our blood transports oxygen throughout out body and is made of Iron. Iron is what gives the red color to our blood which is a clear indication about the high content of iron and its importance in the blood.
Folate is also an essential part of Hemoglobin. Magnesium plays an important role of forming blood clots in our body. Without the clotting function, a single cut can bleed out the last traces of blood from our body.
Copper is used by our bodies for healthy metabolism of Iron and formation of red blood cells (RBC). On top of all, Vitamin C is necessary for absorption of Iron in the body.
No matter how much iron rich diet you consume, it is not going to convert into healthy levels of hemoglobin in the blood if there is deficiency of Vitamin C.
All these minerals- manganese, magnesium, copper, iron, Vitamin C and folate are present in lychee and make it a complete food for blood formation, its level and overall health.

4. Increase Metabolism

Lychee contains good amount of fiber and Vitamin B-complex which increase metabolism. A particular component Oligonol contained in lychee has shown promising results in regulating  metabolism.
Metabolism is required to assimilate, absorb and throw the excess nutrition out of our bodies. This includes fats, proteins, sugar and carbohydrates.
People suffering from insulin resistance due to lousy metabolism must consume food items like Lychee which is rich in Oligonol.Though due to its high sugar content, lychees are just not recommended for diabetics but those who have a potential threat of this disorder can definitely take advantage of the useful metabolism encouraging qualities of this fruit.
It also helps in dissolving fat from the body. The high water content of about 80-85% is also makes lychee a great flushing agent.

5. Skin’s Best friend

Our skin bears the brunt of ageing, pollution, exposure to harmful UV rays, stress and other lifestyle related disturbances.
Though ageing is really a natural phenomenon but is expedited by rest of the factors mentioned earlier. The result is dull skin with fine lines that make you look much older than your age. The main cause of ageing is free radicals produced in our body, due to high oxidative stress .
But antioxidants have proven to destroy these free radicals to slow the ageing process. A right combination of food items in our diet can delay the onset of skin ageing significantly.
Vitamin C and high water content of Lychees is an ideal blend of age delaying factors. Vitamin C cleans the impurities and water flushes them out. Both of these keep the skin radiant and well-hydrated diminishing the wrinkles and fine lines.

6. Heart Disease & Blood Pressure

In a research it was found that antioxidants rich foods lower blood pressure. Lychee contains high amount of antioxidant Vitamin C.
A high fiber content also discourages fat formation and fat reserves in the body. Lychee contains high amount of dietary fiber which proves best nutrient that promote cardiovascular health.

Also lychee has proved to reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and increase good cholesterol (HDL) level in blood. Thus it improves the blood flow towards the heart and  reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke and hypertension.
Fiber rich foods have proved to suppress appetite and increase metabolism. This brings down the overall blood cholesterol level which creates obstruction in the blood circulation. Potassium further aids the heart beat by keeping and regulating the muscle function of our body. online shopping now at home, order now to lychee and enjoy healthful life.

Online Grocery shopping - Black pepper

Incredibly popular black pepper, often referred as “king of spice”, is a well-known spice since ancient times. The peppercorn plant is native to tropical evergreen rain forest of South Indian state, Kerala, from where it spread to rest of the world. The Pepper fruit, also known as the peppercorn, is actually a berry obtained from pepper plant.

Botanically, peppercorn belongs to the family of Piperaceae of the genus of piper; and known scientifically asPiper nigrum. It is a perennial vine and climber that requires supporting tree or pole to grow in height; thus it has similar growth characteristics that of beetle leaf plant. The pepper plant start producing small round berries after about three to four years of plantation. Technically, the pepper berry is a drupe, measuring about 5 mm in diameter, containing a single large seed at its center.

The color of peppercorns found in the markets are nothing but the same pepper fruit, which picked up from the plant at different stages of maturity and subjected to different methods of processing. In general, the peppercorns were harvested while half-matured and just about to turn red. They are then left to dry under the sun light until they become shrivel and turns black (black peppercorns). Alternatively, green peppercorns are picked while the berries still unripe and green. The white peppercorn got its name when a completely ripe berry soaked in the brine in order to remove its dark, outer skin, exposing inner white-color pepper seed.
Black peppers have a strong pungent flavor that comes to them from volatile-oils, such as piperine. In case of ground peppercorns, these volatile oils may disappear because of evaporation of these compounds if kept open in the air for extended periods.

Medicinal uses :-

  • Peppers have been used therapeutically in dentistry as an antiseptic for tooth-decay and gum swellings.
  • Peppercorns are also being used as traditional medicines in treating flatulence and indigestion, however, there is little or no data to support these claims in modern medicine.

Culinary uses :-

Black pepper is one of the most versatile spices used in virtually in all kinds of savoury cooking. In order to keep their fragrance and flavor intact, they are generally ground just before preparing dishes and added at the last minutes in the recipes (since prolonged cooking results in evaporation of essential oils).
  • Black peppercorns along with other spices and seasonings are used to marinate chicken,
  • fish, and meat.
  • The spice is used liberally in Indian vegetarian and chicken curries and in the Middle-East, in meat and rice dishes.
  • They can be used in the preparation of soups, barbecue sauces, pickling and as a main ingredient in variety of curry powders (Indian garam masala powder).
  • Although preferred in savoury foods, this spice is also used in tiny quantities in sweet preparations like fruitcakes, breads, pies to add a spicy note.

Health benefits of black pepper :-

  • Peppercorns contain an impressive list of plant derived chemical compounds that are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties. Peppers have been in use since centuries for its anti-inflammatory, carminative, anti-flatulent properties.
  • Peppercorns are composed of health benefiting essential oils such as piperine, an amine alkaloid, which gives strong spicy pungent character to the pepper. It also contains numerous monoterpenes hydrocarbons such as sabinene, pinene, terpenene, limonene,
  •  mercene, etc., which altogether gives aromatic property to the pepper.
  • The above-mentioned active principles in the pepper may increase the gut motility as well as the digestion power by increasing gastro-intestinal enzyme secretions. It has also been found that piperine can increase absorption of selenium, B-complex vitamins, beta-carotene, as well as other nutrients from the food.
  • Black peppercorns contain a good amount of minerals like potassium, calcium, zinc, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutaseIron is essential for cellular respiration and blood cell production.
  • They are also an excellent source of many vital B-complex groups of vitamins such as Pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin and niacin.
